For many people in the Glenside area the closure of the Greenwood Avenue bridge has created the need for creative detours and extra time to get to local businesses. Jenkintown borough officials were notified by PennDOT that the bridge is now expected to open in June 2014 almost 8 months behind schedule.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is replacing the
structurally deficient Greenwood Avenue bridge over SEPTA railroad
tracks as part of a $5 million dollar project.
Construction to remove the 72-year-old bridge began in June 2012. The new
Greenwood Avenue bridge will be 94 feet long and 48 feet wide. It will
carry three 11-foot-wide lanes and five-foot-wide sidewalks when opened.
