Greenwood Avenue Bridge - New Open Date

For many people in the Glenside area the closure of the Greenwood Avenue bridge has created the need for creative detours and extra time to get to local businesses.  Jenkintown borough officials were notified by PennDOT that the bridge is now expected to open in June 2014 almost 8 months behind schedule.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is replacing the structurally deficient Greenwood Avenue bridge over SEPTA railroad tracks as part of a $5 million dollar project.

Construction to remove the 72-year-old bridge began in June 2012.  The new Greenwood Avenue bridge will be 94 feet long and 48 feet wide. It will carry three 11-foot-wide lanes and five-foot-wide sidewalks when opened.

Dress it Forward!

Sometimes one person is all it takes to make a difference.  Last year Abel, a junior at Abington Senior High School, launched a program called Dress it Forward.  One of her friends was not going to be able to attend her prom because she could not afford a dress and the idea for dress it forward was launched.

Last year, four girls were given the opportunity to feal like a princess at their prom because of Abel and the remaining donated dresses went to the Wilson Park Boys & Girls Club in Philadelphia.  Thanks to this motivated high school student Dress it Forward for the Wilson Park Boys & Girls Club will be back again this year.

Abel has collected approximately 30 dresses from her drop-off locations at Bunn’s Natural Foods in Southampton, Linda’s Loft in Jenkintown, Leto’s Cleaners in Huntingdon Valley and Abington Senior High School.  Donations will be accepted until April 11.

The Cure for Cabin Fever!

With all of this snow on the ground we can spend our days dreaming of vacation spots with beaches and umbrella drinks or we can bundle up and embrace all of the fun things that come with this time of year.  One of the most fun winter activities is Ice Skating.  It is even more fun if you don't know how to skate or can go with people who are newbies.   In the Glenside area we head out to Old York Road Ice Rink for some skating and good laughs!  Skating provides great exercise and an opportunity to get out of the house and cure your cabin fever.  The rink is actually inside so its probably warmer in there than it is outside!

Old York Road Skating Club Ice Skating Rink was founded in Elkins Park, PA, it is an indoor rink and is open year round. For hours and more information visit their facebook page.

New Year - New Look

Once all the holiday decorations are all packed safely in their boxes I always look around at the house and feel like something is missing.  A great way to give your home an after holiday uplift is to add a new piece of furniture.  The Pink Door in Glenside is rehabbing some beautiful old pieces and turning them into works of art.

Take a look at the website www.thepinkdoorofglenside.com or like them on facebook for a peak into their inventory.  It could be just what you are looking for. This is one of my favorite pieces.

Before
After

About the Pink Door: We at the Pink Door are doing our part to keep beautiful, well-built furniture out of land fills.  We will find pieces that have good bones and lots of potential and we will rescue them.  Our team will then assess the condition, shore up any "wonky" parts, pick a fabulous color or colors, get some great knobs or other hardware and Viola! New life for a timeless piece.  Sometimes we leave a piece "as-is" or we will do a custom color for our customers.
